Just like humans, your chickens will benefit from organic feed. Free from artificial additives, an important factor when raising hens who lay beautiful eggs. Organic feed and treats support better gut health, natural behaviour, ensures you have a full farm to table egg production in your own back garden. Waitrose would even struggle to match that!
Chickens have poor digestion. They need grit to digest food, as it helps break down grain in the gizzard. We choose to offer oyster shell, which is high in calcium and vital for laying hens because it's a natural way to help produce strong eggshells and supports long-term health. Offering both grit and oyster shell ensures your flock gets what it needs lay perfect and nutritious eggs.
Layers pellets and layers mash are nutritionally the same. The difference is texture: pellets are compressed into small sticks, while mash is a looser, crumbly mix. Most hens eat either happily, but pellets tend to cause less waste as hens are less likely to flick them out of the feeder.
Start offering grit once your hens begin eating whole grains or move off chick crumb, usually from around 8 weeks old. Insoluble grit (flint) helps them grind down their food in the gizzard. Oyster shell or mixed grit adds calcium, which supports strong eggshells in laying hens.
In the UK it is against the law to feed kitchen scraps, including vegetable peelings, to chickens kept for eggs or meat. This rule exists to reduce the risk of disease transmission. Purpose-made treats are the safe and legal way to give your hens something extra alongside their regular feed.
Organic chicken feed is produced without synthetic pesticides or artificial additives and is certified to organic standards. It supports natural gut health and is a good choice if you want to keep your hens' diet as natural as possible. Standard layers feed is nutritionally complete and suitable for most backyard flocks.
A laying hen typically eats around 120 to 150 grams of feed per day. This increases slightly in winter when hens need more energy to stay warm, and may be a little lower for hens that free-range and supplement their diet naturally. Check feeders daily to make sure they never run completely empty.
Pecker balls, pecker blocks, Coop Mix scatter feed and fresh herbs are all popular and safe choices. Treats like Hentastic are formulated specifically for poultry and include herbs, seeds and vitamins. As a general rule, treats should make up no more than about 10 percent of your hens' overall diet, with their complete layers feed providing the rest.
